“Boarded by pirates, caught in whirlpools, rescued by whales…”

These are a few of the painful, often poignant and profound memories and stories of Resilience and Resistance visually expressed by nine Vietnamese Boat People, in their collaboration with Voice to Vision artists. For this 9^th exhibition by Voice to Vision, artists also joined with Latin American activists and recently deceased Greek Holocaust survivor Esther Winthrop, to create works of art addressing personal experiences of human rights issues and violations.

In conjunction with the exhibit, artist, musician, and composer Kimchi Hoang introduces her comprehensive work Journey to Nowhere;  a series of 12 paintings about Kimchi’s life before, during, and after the Vietnamese War. Ms. Hoang composes and performs original music to accompany her artwork, and will be performing at the opening reception on April 15.

Directed by David Feinberg and in cooperation with the Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies at the University of Minnesota, Voice to Vision partners survivors with artists to create works that express their memories and stories. Latin American activists who are addressing human rights issues and violations using a variety of creative, performance, and academic platforms have joined with Voice to Vision to include a preview of an exhibit headed for Bogota, Columbia that reflects their experiences. Voice to Vision will also premiere a documentary film of Esther Winthrop creating works of art based on her life experiences.

Kimchi Hoang will play music written for her artworks with ­­other musicians as accompaniment at the opening reception.
